Merry Birthday!!!
Now that Halloween and Thanksgiving are over, we can start thinking about Christmas. I love Christmas; it's definitely my favorite time of year. And it's not just because of all the presents and good cheer. It's also because I have a Christmas birthday. Yes, that's right, my birthday is December 28th. Everyone I talk to about this says "It must have been rough, sharing your birthday week with JC, but it's never really been a problem for me, and i'm sure JC hasn't even noticed much.
My family was never mean, or cheap enough to try and combine my birthday and Christmas into one big Merry Birthday celebration, which I am really glad for. I think they set a good precident early, so none of my relatives were able to get off the hook for just one present for both events. I'm a little more grown up these days, so I won't mind if people send me Merry Birthday Ecards. It actually works out well, because many of my friends are on holidays during the Christmas break, so it makes it easy for them to come to my Birthday party. It's a busy time though so I always have to be sure to send out the Birthday party invitations early enough so people can plan to attend in that busy season. It's always worked out well for me. Everyone's in a good mood and filled with holiday cheer; either that, or they're ready to get away from their families for a night and party down with their good friends. This party should be the best yet.I sent out the Christmas/Birthday Party invitations today and people have already started to respond. I don't think my man JC will be able to make it, but I can't really blame him; he'll probably be a little tired after the whole world celebrates his birthday on the 25th.

Invitation to be Cheap
I'm getting married next summer. I'm really looking forward to the day, and I'm very happy about my fiancee, but I gotta tell you: Wedding planning is not easy. That being said, I need to admit that I'm hardly doing anything. A lot of nodding in agreement whenever possible is the name of the game if you're a groom to be. What's really difficult is watching the amount of money we're spending on this oh so special day. So far we've taken care of the place, the cake, the dress, the decorations in the past few weeks, and just yesterday we turned our attention to the wedding invitations.
Wedding invitations are a tricky thing and it's not just wedding invitations any more. According to some awesome bride magazine that my fiancee read, the new and trendy things are to send out "save the date" cards about 4 months before you send out the invitations. Save the date cards are invitations to the wedding invitations and are essentially, just another way for you to spend cashola more on your wedding.
We picked out a nice design with cherry blossoms on it. It's a very nice design and it only cost something like $50.
I started looking for some cheaper options. MyFunCards has some cool options for invitations, but they're really more party invitations. They're all animated and you can't really print them. They're all a little too jokey for a proper wedding invitations. Then I started playing around with the other free greeting card/invitation program on this site, EZ Cards. You really can make some cool looking cards and invitations with this program. I made some nice simple ones to show my fiancée what could be done for free. She liked them so much that she agreed to send the ones I made out as the Invitations to the Invitations or the 'save the day' cards we talked about. She still wants to send professionally designed invitations for the actual invitations, but I was happy to contribute in this small way. And the save the day cards really do look good.
Don't get me wrong, I'm really not that cheap. I'm keen on having the nicest wedding invitations ever, and even the nicest invitations to the invitations. I'm pretty much resigned to making it the nicest day ever in whatever way I can, and if that means inviting people twice, then I'm all for it. I just wish she didn't have to write my name in such fancy pink letters, but I'll get over it.

Birthday Ecard Ettiquette
A few months back, I recieved a birthday ecard from an ex girlfriend. The relationship ended rather messily about 2 years ago and I haven't really heard from her until now. For some reason, clearly beyond me, she sent a funny animated birthday ecard to me this morning. It had a little animated monkey who was dancing around a cake (which he eventually fell over on and crushed. All it said was "Happy Birthday!"
I feel I'm a pretty intuitive person, but what the heck am I supposed take from this?? Is the monkey supposed to represent me, and is the way he mucks and messes the cake a reference to how I mucked and messed the relationship? Or is the monkey supposed to be our relationship and a reference to how cake got in the way. I just need to know who the monkey is! Maybe the monkey is just a monkey and she just wanted to say hello and that she remembered my birthday in a nice, unconfusing way.
My theory is that, when you send a birthday ecard, especially to someone you haven't spoken to in years, especially someone who you were once romantically involved in, you really need to write a nice message in the message area. That way I'd know a little more about her motivation for writing the card. Does she miss me or want to get back together? (forget it honey!) Two lines of nicely worded text at the bottom of the birthday ecard would have cleared this up for me.
Anyway this whole birthday ecard fiasco thing has left me in a bit of a tizzy as you can surely tell. Send you birthday ecards with caution and if you write one to an ex, after not speaking to them in a while. Make sure you make explicitly clear, what your intentions are in the message section of the ecard...And if you've had a few drinks (or a few too many) wait until you're sober to do anything ecard related.

My Most Animated Birthday
I was thinking about all the different animated birthday cards that My Fun Cards has to offer. I'm pretty sure that every single birthday ecard that they have to offer is in fact, an animated birthday card. It got me thinking about my most animated birthday, or that is to say, the birthday that made me the most animated, angry and embarassed. My thoughts turn to my 15th birthday though as the one that sticks out in my mind as the most embarassing. This is the story I will relay.
I was turning 15 and in grade 8 at the time. My parents took me and my best friend Jon out to a restaurant called Moose Winooskies for my birthday. I knew this place had a reputation for embarassing the birthday boy so I was dreading it from the start. I kept pleading with my family and friend Jon not to do anything stupid, like tell the staff that it was my birthday because I knew something terrible would happen. I should have known that they were planning to spring it on me. It was my birthday after all.
After dinner I saw the staff gathering near the side. They approached me singing some terrible rendition of Happy Birthday with a lot of hand claps and someone playing the kazoo. One person held a small birthday cake with a blazing sparkler on top and a person beside him held a helmet affixed with giant moose antlers. It looked like some sort of midieval torture device, designed to ruin my social life.
I took a quick look around the room to see everyone staring at my table. Everyone also seemed to be 15-16 year old girls, giggling at my animated birthday situation. I was mortified.
I allowed the antlers to be placed on my head for some reason. I then had to spin a wheel to see what prize I would get. The top prize being a pie in the face. Sweet. I spun the wheel, tore off the helmet and flew off to the arcade to play street fighter and forget about this terrible birthday situation.
I look back on it now, and you'd think I'd laugh. But I'm still pissed at Jon for not sticking up for me. I guess I'm a poor sport, and I certainly would have done the same thing to him if given the chance.
I wish my parents had just sent me an animated birthday card, or an animated birthday e-card instead of giving me my most embarassing birthday moment ever.

The Cure for Birthday Card Amnesia
I have a pretty big problem remembering birthdays and an even bigger problem remembering to send Birthday Cards. I don't know why this is. I don't think of myself as a particularly forgetful person, though my girlfriend might have something to say about this. But regardless I have trouble remember more than one or two birthdays at any given time. Right now I remember my Girlfriend's birthday, because it just occurred. I know the months the rest of my immediate family were born in, but as to their actual birthdays... I'm pretty much clueless. Whenever their birth months turn over on my calendar I have to play a stupid game where I call someone in my family and hint around at the coming birthday and pray that they reveal the magic date without figuring out that I'm an idiot. If this fails I just ask my brother, because he knows I'm an idiot already.
I know my mom's birthday was on the 3rd of July, but that's because I forgot it. There was a time I remembered it. I even recall the trick I employed to remember her birthday. I just thought of that Tom Cruise movie; Born on the 4th of July. All I would have to do was remember that date and subtract one to remember that My mom's birthday was July 3rd. Sounds simple enough right? Guess again! As soon as July 1st rolled around, I triumphantly remembered my little line: "Born on the 4th of July!" But then I couldn't remember if I had to subtract one or add one to get my Mom's actual Birthday. 4th sounds more like 5th than it does like 3rd, so naturally I chose the wrong birthday and planned on calling her on the 5th. She called me late in the day on July 3rd, more than a little miffed that I hadn't called her to wish her a happy birthday yet. I couldn't say that I thought her birthday was the 5th, so I told her I was in a full body cast and couldn't reach a phone. She didn't buy that for a second. Good thing she loves me unconditionally or I might of found myself in a full body cast after all!
One of the cool things about Birthday-Funcards is that when you download it, it comes with a birthday calendar that automatically reminds you a couple days in advance when an important birthday comes up. Now I just have to remember to ask my brother when everybody's birthday is.
